National Fuel Scheme

The National Fuel Scheme is a scheme that is intended to help households in Ireland who are dependent on long-term social welfare or health board payments and who are unable to provide for their own heating needs by providing the Fuel Allowance and the Smokeless Fuel Allowance payments. The scheme operates for 32 weeks from the end of September to April.

You will qualify for the National Fuel Scheme if you are receiving one of the following Social Welfare payments:

  • Long-term Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Disability Allowance
  • State (Contributory) Pension
  • Deserted Wife's Benefit or Allowance
  • State (Non-Contributory) Pension
  • One-Parent Family Payment
  • State Pension (Transition)
  • Guardian's Payment (Contributory)
  • Widow's or Widower's (Contributory) Pension
  • Guardian's Payment (Non-Contributory)
  • Widow's or Widowers (Non-Contributory) Pension
  • Farm Assist
  • Incapacity Supplement
  • Pre-Retirement Allowance
  • Blind Pension
  • Prisoners Wife's Allowance
  • Invalidity Pension

You will also qualify if you are receiving one of the following Health Board payments:

  • Basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance
  • Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Allowance
  • Infectious Diseases Maintenance Allowance

The Fuel Allowance is €20 per week. You may receive this allowance for 32 Weeks from September to April.

You may also get an additional Smokeless Fuel Allowance of €3.90 per week if you live in Arklow, Bray, Celbridge, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Dundalk, Galway City, Kilkenny, Leixlip, Limerick, Naas, Sligo, Tralee, Waterford City and Wexford where the sale of bituminous fuel is banned.You may receive this allowance for 32 Weeks from September to April.
